This is a fantastic Vietnam War-era Marine pith helmet. It is covered in classic khaki cloth and features the Marine Corps emblem on the front.
The pith helmet has long been used by militaries world-wide to protect the wearer from the sun. Crude forms have existed as early as the 1840's and were popularized during the Franco-Prussian War.
The United States Marine Corps' issued their first pith helmets to the 1st Marine Division upon their deployment to Guantanamo Bay in 1940.
This particular pith helmet likely dates from approximately the 1960s (the height of the Vietnam War).
As you can see, the Marine Corps insignia of the Eagle, Anchor, and Globe is rendered in substantial, black-painted metal and pinned securely to the front of the helmet.
The first-ever version of the emblem was adopted in 1776, during the American Revolution.
An eagle, representing American freedom, sits on top of a globe that shows the continents of the Western hemisphere.
The anchor is said to be an acknowledgement of the Corps naval history.
The completely rigid helmet is covered in all-khaki cloth and features 6 matching grommet-holes on each side for ventilation.
The khaki chin-strap is currently wrapped around the front of the brim but can be repositioned. The length of the strap can also be adjusted, or the strap can be removed altogether.
The interior of the helmet is lined in Kelly-green fabric and features an adjustable leather band allowing the wearer to make the helmet fit snugly and comfortably.
A light black manufacturer's mark is stamped on the interior of the helmet and reads "Helmet, Sunrigid, Fibre, DSA, 100, 163, 84-15-163-4773".
These marks help us to identify the era during which the helmet was manufactured.
With only a few light marks on the interior, this helmet remains in outstanding, unused vintage condition. It would make the ideal addition to a costume or collection!
