Intricate and Elegant Antique Victorian "98 Sterling" Hair Comb
The "fan" or decorative upper part of the comb features an extraordinary hand-wrought pierced decoration including languid foliate scrolls. These are further embellished with exquisite hand-etchings.
Two long "teeth" extend from the bottom; both are twisted at the top, creating a lovely decorative touch as well as adding extra security when worn. There is a hallmark right above the teeth which reads "98 Sterling".
We originally thought that the "98 Sterling" was a marker for plated sterling, but there is no magnetism in the comb to indicate there is a base metal and it doesn't look or feel plated at all. We know Russian sterling is marked with two digits, but this isn't Russian. It is a mystery, but a beautiful one.
It exhibits expected minor surface wear and patina commensurate with its age. This superb Victorian comb is in great antique condition.
It is only partially polished, but it would shine to a brilliant finish. We leave it to the owner's individual preference whether to keep the natural patina or polish it.
