This beautiful vintage Heywood Wakefield cocktail table is a stylish example of timeless elegance paired with daring modernism.
This model is made of Northern Yellow Birch wood and has a beautiful color and surface texture.
This daring model was first introduced in 1947, and has the wildly unique quality of having a completely mobilized "Lazy Susan" top.
As you can see, the table's four legs emanate from a fixed component in the center and sumptuously curve to the floor.
The Heywood Wakefield Company is renowned for their highly-protected techniques for bending wood.
Typically, the already moistened pieces of wood are steamed to hundreds of degrees and then bent completely by hand. Sometimes, for the larger pieces, a hydraulic machine is used.
The table bears a decadent "Champagne" finish (another favorite among Heywood Wakefield designers) and feels wonderfully smooth to the touch. It has a hint of modern birch tones.
You will notice that the table top spins smoothly on a hidden metal component, but could use a new coat of furniture-safe grease.
You will find the traditional "Heywood Wakefield" company-logo stenciled in dark blue on the table's underside, as well as marks reading "#58", "Champagne", "INSP #7", and "306".
A light carpenter's mark can be seen in red pencil and reads "10/12".
Finally, a mark bearing this particular table's birthday can be seen on the underside. It reads "Oct 19, 1955". These marks are all completely appropriate and to be expected.
The tabletop shows some light scuffing and a bit of expected wear, as do they legs, though the marks are very minor. There are some very small areas where scratches may have been filled at one point.
We cannot convey in words the timeless beauty of this table, or the decadent 1950's style. This is an investment piece to be sure that will delight and brighten your décor for years to come.
