Antique Bronze Portrait Plaque of President Abraham Lincoln

High relief plaque depicting an elegant ˝ length portrait 7.125” by 9.375 inches by Victor D. Brenner (1871 – 1924). Complete with hanging loop ring on back and a divining rod shaped table stand that opens with a hinge attachment. Right side features the artist’s logo monogram and year of making “1907” along with “copyright 1907 by V. D. Brenner.” The base reads: “ABRAHAM LINCOLN **1809 * 1865**”

In original estate condition with minor surface wear in upper corners and several areas of greenish tarnishing visible in photos that I assume can be cleaned up with a little expertise. In fact, the whole plaque could probably use a good cleaning and slight buffing to bring it back to its original copper luster or soft matt Verdi Gris finish.

Recognize this Lincoln image? Since 1909, over 450 billion have been stamped out to date, making it the most well known and widely reproduced image in the history of mankind. The Lincoln cent closely replicates a plaque Brenner initially created in 1907 to capitalize on the upcoming centennial of Lincoln's birth, thinking he would find plenty of buyers

Paraphrasing Wikipedia, “The likeness of President Lincoln on the obverse of the coin is an adaptation of a plaque Brenner executed several years earlier and which had come to the attention of President Roosevelt in New York. Bronze bas-reliefs dated 1907 and signed by Brenner have been identified and some sold in auctions for as much as $3,900. Brenner's design had been picked by 26th US President, Theodore Roosevelt, who had earlier posed for him in New York. The son of a mechanic and seal cutter in the Jewish community of Shavli, Lithuania, since arriving 19 years earlier in the United States, Brenner had become one of the nation’s premier medalists. Roosevelt had learned of Brenner's talents and was immediately impressed with a bas-relief that Brenner had made of Lincoln, based on a Civil War era photograph taken by a Brady Studio artist, February, 1864.”

So, this is one of those original bronze plaques that inspired the most popular coin and portrait bust of all time. A first rate Lincoln collectible!
