19th Century Mule Chest

This form of chest over two drawers was the next step after the simple blanket chest and was a glimpse of the chest of drawers to come. This example likely dates to the first half of the 19th Century.

The pine chest measures 35 1/2" by 20 1/2" deep and 30 1/2" tall. The case is dovetailed and stands on bracket feet. The chest retains its till with hinged lid, unchanged from the earlier blanket chests.

The condition is excellent with no losses and a repaired till lid the only repair The surface looks to have been refinished some time ago. The hinges are smith-made and original as are the iron drawer pulls.

If you don't need the lift-lid space these mule chests make great TV stands.
