Diminutive 19th Century Walnut Countertop Display Case
Note the through mortise construction on the top, a nice touch and consistent with a mid-19th Century beginning.
The case is glassed on four sides and top, over two drawers (2" by 9" wide and 11" deep), and standing on 4 straight feet. The case opens from the top and can be secured by the original brass hasp. We can picture this case standing on a counter top in a country store holding specialty items like pocket watches.
This was found under two coats of paint. The drawer mortise locks had been removed and plugged and one glass panel was broken. The restoration put the finish back to its original, bright state with the interior painted white, which looks correct for this piece and the period. Both drawer locks were replaced and the left side glass panel was replaced with conservator's glass. Some traces of the earlier painted surfaces are evident.
This would be a great piece for collectors of 19th Century smalls such as watches, jewelry, silver, red ware, etc.
