Here is a hooked rug scene that is very charming in its simplicity - a cottage on a gravel path surrounded by trees and shrubs. The more I look at it, the more I expect "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" to come singing and dancing out the front door. The timing is about right as the Walt Disney movie was released in 1938 - approximately when we believe this rug was made.
The rug measures 48" by 31 1/2". It is made from a combination of mainly wool yarn plus a few areas of folded fabric on burlap. I would guess that the maker was using materials that she had available. That would also explain the mix of browns on the border. It appears the maker attempted to "extend the scene" on the bottom border and then used what was available to complete the other three sides.
The condition is good - the rug was definitely used. At one time the sky was a brighter blue - now it is a grey/blue. It has been lightly hand cleaned.
