Vintage Black Memorabilia Painted Tin Roadside Sign - "Suitcase Sam"

These wonderfully colorful signs were made to be nailed to barns or early sign boards to advertise local merchants. This particular sign advertises "C.E. Mapes Furniture and Undertaking" in Durand, Michigan. This combination of furniture and undertaking was not uncommon in the early days. This sign dates to the early 1900's.

The sheet metal sign is 12" wide and 48 1/2" tall. The multi-color design uses a character sketch to draw attention to the message. We call this guy "Suitcase Sam."

The sign has been attached to a modern frame for protection and ease of display. The condition is good but with multiple nail holes from repeated use.
