From the standpoints of form, size and surface this is a wonderful weathervane.
This full bodied crowing rooster, in copper, stands 25" tall (27 1/2" tall on the based), is 25" wide and 7 1/4" thick at the wing tips. Notice the good detail in the head and nicely arched tail feathers and the attached, three dimensional wings. He sits atop a 6" diameter ball in sheet iron which is also gilded.
He retains an early gilded surface with some minor weathered areas of verdigris. There is some slight separation of the feathers at the bottom of the tail. Please note the detailed photo of this area.
The form is reminiscent of the earlier game cocks. We are dating the weathervane in the second half of the 19th Century.
