Marquetry Box in the Form of a Book

This delightful hand made box is in the form of a book. The spine pulls out revealing an inner sleeve.

The primary woods for the case are curly maple and cherry with various exotic hardwoods used for the inlay. The inner sleeve looks to be maple.

The inlay motif of heart/club/spade/diamond suggests the box was made to hold two decks of cards - perhaps for a hand or two of bridge.

The box measures 6 7/8" tall by 4 5/8" wide and 1 1/8" thick. The surface looks to be original. The spine shows an area that was repaired.
