This rug is a great example of why primitive folk art is so appealing. The rug has all the elements: simple lines, purity of design, the use of outlining to suggest three dimension and the juxtaposition of multicolored material (the lake) with vibrant solids. The moose scene simply brings a smile to your face.
The material is rayon on burlap. Rayon was first produced in the 1880's. DuPont acquired the rights to the manufacturing process and made rayon a household name in the 1920's as an affordable alternative to silk. This history, combined with the rug's design suggests an origin in the rich folk art tradition of the 1930's.
The rug measures 21 1/2" by 39". It has been professionally backed and mounted for wall display. This one is too good to walk on!
