Watermelon Man Whirligig

We just fell in love with this guy. This wooden whirligig is in the carved and painted figural form of a black man, in overalls, with arms spread and watermelon slices for hands (paddles). The upper arms, torso and head are black with blue overalls and gold and white accents.

He measures 15 1/4" tall (on base) with a 9 1/2" wingspan. The surface looks to be early and original. He is mounted on a turned wooden base with a square plinth.

We believe this is a rare and exceptional form dating from the late 19th or early 20th century.
