Vintage Dancin' Ballerina Jig Doll

Here is a fabulous jig or limberjack toy. This Dancin' Ballerina is a 12" tall carved wooden black man with articulated limbs, spring neck and original paint. He stands on a paddle that has painted in the center: "Dancin' Ballerina," a star and a circle. Part of the letters in Dancin (the N, C and I), a portion of the N in Ballerina and the center star has been worn away - probably too much dancin'.

Jig or Limberjack dolls are traditional wooden or tin-plate toys for adults or children. These dolls have loose limbs that step dance or "jig" on the end of a vibrating board or platform, imitating a real step or clog dancer. Dancing dolls have been popular street entertainment dating back to the 16th century. (Wikipedia)

This early 20th century doll shows some wear on the figure - the striped shirt in some spots has worn down to the gesso One of the original straps that attaches the paddle to the board has been replaced. Please review all photos.
