A bit more about Howard Johnson...

Known as America's Landmark... Under the Orange Roof , the Howard Johnson empire started from humble beginnings in a drugstore in the Wollaston section of Quincy, Massachusetts. Here, in 1925, entrepreneur Howard Deering Johnson installed a soda fountain and found that it was the busiest part of his new store, as well as the most profitable. Howard Johnson's restaurants became a fabulous success, and by 1951, the sales of the Howard Johnson's companies totaled $115 million.

By 1975, at the height of the franchise's success, Howard Johnson's operated over 500 family-friendly, affordable motor lodges in 42 states and Canada, as well as over 1000 restaurants.
