Round, hand carved mother-of-pearl pin reminiscent of a flower is 1 1/2 inches in diameter with an alternating smooth and serrated edge. The outer portion of the pin is a little less than 1/16th of an inch thick. The center portion is approximately 2/16th of an inch in thickness. Hand carved by artisans of Bethlehem on the West Bank. Silver tone pin back is stamped "BETHLEHEM" and the safety catch is in good working order.
Fifteenth century Franciscan friars from Italy brought the craft of hand carving and polishing mother-of-pearl to city of Bethlehem in Palestine. Today, some 700 years later, the craft is still being practiced and mother-of-pearl items are a popular souvenir.
