Oblong or oval hand carved mother-of-pearl pin. Center portion of pin is 3/16th of an inch thick and is surrounded by a delicate, reticulated border. Pin measures 2 inches by 1 1/2 inches. Hand carved by artisans of Bethlehem on the West Bank of the Jordon River. Silver tone pin back is stamped "MADE IN BETHLEHEM". The safety catch is in good working order.
Fifteenth century Franciscan friars from Italy brought the craft of hand carving and polishing mother-of-pearl to the town Bethlehem in Palestine. Today, some 700 years later, the craft is still being practiced and mother-of-pearl items are a popular souvenir.
