Elgin American Art Deco Enamel Necessaire- Tango Compact-Minaudiere -- 30s

This is a fantastic find from the flapper era -- likely dates from the 1920s -- 30s. A similar compact/necessaire -- different only in design -- by Elgin was included in the famous compact exhibition presented by the Arizona Museum of Art in 2004(see Plate 21,#5, of the catalog). It is a so-called vanity compact -- octagonal in shape -- that contains small round receptacles for lipstick or rouge, powder, and coins -- there are three receptacles in all. The mirror is on the opposite side and is in excellent condition. These were called tango or dance compacts and, of course, attached to the compact is the original tango chain -- the better to dance the night away. It is made of a silver metal -- called Elginite -- by Elgin American Manufacturing. The enamel lid is decorated in bright pink and mustard yellow enamel with a repousse design of ziggerauts and a cactus! The ziggerauts resemble the architectural sightlines of pueblo villages. In fact, I consider this to be an outstanding -- and rare -- example of Pueblo Deco. The reverse is an engine turned striped design -- very narrow and wider stripes -- decorated with small diamond shapes. Measures 2 1/4 inches in diameter and is signed E.A.M. with an arrow by the front inside clasp. E.A.M. is a mark used by Elgin American Manufacturing. The overall condition is excellent -- the only flaw I can find is some small enamel nicks. These could be touched up rather easily and I have pictured the missing enamel spots. I believe this is a rare and special piece -- perhaps a one of a kind --'Pueblo Deco' pieces are quite scarce. This belongs with a serious collector and would represent a great addition to any collection. $255.00 FANTASTIC PRICE REDUCTION! NOW $150!
