Sabino Paris. French Opalescent Glass Shell Pattern Tray – Signed Original

This is a delightful example of opalescent glass by Sabino, Paris which denotes that was produced for the French marketplace only and not for export. The pattern was also produced as a small 12cm bowl and a large 20cm plate. This piece is the Shell Tray at 16cms diameter.

Opalescent glass is produced by a slower cooling method to the thicker parts of a piece. This causes a crystallisation inside of the glass, which gives a more transparent opalescence to the thinner areas and a richer effect on the thicker surface areas. The creamy-whites, milk-blues and the golden-amber colours which can be observed are all subject to different light conditions. When this piece for example is held up to a window and lit from behind, all of the opalescence disappears completely and the glass becomes entirely transparent with a subtle hint of golden-amber. Taken away from any direct light source and then the piece displays all of the luxurious qualities associated to opalescent glass. Each factory had its own recipe to produce the variety of opalescent examples that we see today. Very few factories still produce this glass type, due to the high levels of technical difficulty and the poisonous ingredients which are necessary to make this glass, which included White Arsenic.

The use of opalescent glass makes the design of this piece very striking. The eight mussel shells display much depth due to the remarkable qualities of this glass type. All of the mouldings are to the underside of the tray, which when viewed from above, glisten, edged with white-light. Turn the tray over, and rich milky blues & purples can be observed and the true thickness of each mussel shell. The four larger shells are just under 1" thick and it is also these which provide feet for the tray, to elevate it from a surface which in turn provides optimum light penetration from beneath. The results are a visual beauty. The four feet have also been wheel polished at time of manufacture to remove their topmost point so as to act like tiny `pads' to support the tray on a prefect horizontal.

There are no chips, cracks, flea-bites or scratch marks and so its condition is pristine. This is a nice original piece for your collection, and even more so at this current offer price...
