This vintage French terrestrial globe is made from glass which has then been covered with printed paper. It is held into place with a chromium metal/stainless steel semi-meridian.
It is an illumination which is furnished with an internal light bulb, electrical wire flex and a switch, and is a remarkable item of interior display. These items were hugely popular in France, however they were also reserved for the middle to high classes of society of the mid c20th. This particular example is an original and is not a copy.
I cannot imagine the skills involved and required to apply paper to a round globular surface. It can be challenging enough to paste wallpaper for example onto a large flat area, and yet this globe is almost seamless and without any crease marks or folds to the paper!
The globe depicts our world as it was yesteryear. The place names and text are as you would expect in French. Various shipment routes are shown such as `Messageries maritimes' merchant shipping, together with other important sea faring companies `Transatlantiuqe' and `Chargeurs reunis' and the airline routes as were used by `Air France' immediately following the end of WWII. This is not only a visual and usable lamp, it is also an historical educational piece.
The maker of these incredible works was Perrina, who produced all manner of lamps particularly using Art Deco themes and styles. This piece (as can be seen) is fully labelled: GLOBE TERRESTRE PERRINA M.PICQURAT DIRECTEUR 19, Rue des Minnarres. Paris.
The overall condition is pretty remarkable. There are one or two very small areas of missing paper which I have tried best to show, but these are nothing serious and very small... They almost seem like tiny `lakes' upon the globe! The glass, the metal base and the semi-meridian are damage free, as so are the electrical fittings. It requires only a light bulb to become lit, however to conform with safety regulations I shall remove the plug before this item can be shipped to any destination, but it will be included for re-application.
This historical piece is an obvious wise investment. These lamps occasionally appear and even in a very poor state can exchange hands for $600+ and I am as yet to see any examples that are free from wear & tear. Here is an opportunity to acquire a fine example at a very attractive offer price. I would kindly urge you not to allow this chance to pass you by...
