This wonderful 13.5 inch diameter piece from the 1930s Art Deco period is by Etling, France, a name which is synonymous to quality.
It is a gem of a piece which displays & offers a luxurious richness throughout. From design to production this bowl has everything going for it and it possess quality with a capital `Q'
Nothing can quite prepare when seeing glass such as this at close hand. Golden opalescent glass has been used to produce this piece – a glass type seldom used by any maker – not to say that most French opalescent glass will not display golden amber characteristics, but with this piece it has been greatly emphasised to a perfection rarely seen, and without losing the creamy-blues & milky-white colours which are associated to this glass type. It is an exceptional piece indeed as can be seen from my photographs. GOLD appears upon this piece in a flash.
It is not only the outstanding levels of glass working methods & achievements which were established at Choisy-le-Roi who should be applauded for creating this during the Art Deco period, but the very designers and mould makers, who without then this bowl would not have seen the light of day. The mould makers of these glass items are the forgotten heroes and yet their contribution to press moulded glass was (and still is) paramount to its success. There is little room for any error...
Please study this piece for example. It is a translucent piece of glass and even the most minor of defaults cannot be disguised by paint or other materials for example. Absolute precision is required throughout each and every stage to produce a glass piece like this. A single mistake and it's a no go. One minor blimp with the mould, then this piece is doomed, but please look at it and quite closely... Note the precision of each decorative feature, perfectly placed and without a single blemish or distortion, which is essential when using a geometrical designs using glass. Any defects would stand out like a sore thumb! One could get away with a slightly out of place petal of a flower for example but not with this piece. All has got to be uniform or else the entire effect has been lost...
This is a worthy piece that I am offering from my collection and its splendour is as good as any Etling piece, if not more, due to its fabulous opalescent colourisation... It is the Etling pattern number: 207
You will not find another example of this pattern quite as splendid as this. I can assure you.
