This incredible center piece by Etling, reminds us once again of the unsurpassed quality of French Art Deco era opalescent glass produced at Choisy-le-Roi. It is the `Tournesol' (dahlia) pattern number 145, and it is a featured piece by Etling, as listed in the Choisy-le-Roi catalogue of the period.
Etling,' quite often becomes a mash of confusion in terms of the glass which bears its name and its association, for unlike most other major French glass producing names of the era, Etling were not entirely devoted to glass alone, but were rather an `Embracing Society' of quality commissioned items using a wide range of high quality working mediums, such as Ivory, Ceramics, Bronze and of course glass. Etling, in other words was a high-class Salon, rather than a factory. Founded in Paris France at 29 Rue Paradis, circa 1909, Edmond Laurent Etling, used only the very high-class & top freelance designers of the period to adorn his shop with the most incredible objects of its era...
...Outstanding Statuary figurine works by Chipparus, Colinet, Guiraud-Riviere and Lucille Sevin and many others for example, were saleable commissions at Etling as too were also phenomenal examples of glass items designed by Sevres, Geza Hiecz and Georges Beal, to name just a few. Most, if not all Etlings' opalescent glassware from these designers, was produced and made at the Choisy-leRoi glassworks, tantamount in Paris France as a glass producing area of complete and total quality, as this magnificent piece justifiably signifies & demonstrates.
The entire output of Etling glass, was produced solely during the Art Deco period and the company did not continue following WWII, with only Sevres, reproducing many Etling glass female figurines as late as the 1970s.
The visual effects upon this glass piece are phenomenal and they not come much better... The underside of the bowl has been moulded to perfection to form one of the most beautiful glass dahlia blooms ever produced using opalescent glass, by any maker. Each & every petal has been meticulously portrayed & placed with precision, in thick and highly raised relief and the result is breath taking.
All of the gorgeously rich qualities and the characteristics associated to opalescent glass are evident upon this piece and dare I say it, even more... The abundance of differences of thickness, combined with the use of opalescence, has given each glass petal its own unique visual identity. Please study my photographs, as I am sure you will agree...
The dynamic way with which Etling, had this glass piece presented using more quality materials of gilded metal, mahogany wood, make an obvious statement of excellence & class matched with style... As previously mentioned Etling used many freelance French designers of the day and incorporated their works to produce sensational items such as this. Rarely are the metal components signed or maker marked (less they be made from silver or gold for example) and so attributing the various designers/makers is next to impossible.
It is evident that Etling placed great importance upon the glass of this piece, to provide it with such a superior mount, and again, seldom will you find any better. My photographs surely demonstrate the above and are the best description of the piece.
CONDITION REPORT: The glass is mint & pristine. There are no cracks, chips, nicks or damage repairs and it is in fabulous condition. Likewise, there are no splits or damaged areas to the mahogany base or the handles and the metal mounts are also as seen, showing the obvious signs of natural age related oxidisation, but that is all...
