Examples of French Art Deco glass which carry a signature by Costebelle, are far & few between and all items are desirable. Little information exists to help or to establish these pieces, save for their signatures and the various items produced.
Although Costebelle is a town in the Provence-Alpes-Côte dʼAzur region of France, but this could be a pseudonym used by this little known glass maker, however each item produced was of exceptional quality both in design and the glass as was used to create them. From magnificent lamp/luminaires to trinket boxes/bonbonniere's such as this example piece, Costebelle, delivered quality with a capital `Q'
It can be assumed (though not established) that Costebelle utilised the French factories further North, at Choisy-le-Roi. After all, most other named designers did, from Etling, Verlys, and even R Lalique amongst others of the period. The French glass making facilities based at Choisy-le-Roi, were second to none during the time that this piece was produced, particularly with the production of opalescent glass. No other factories could compete, as to why each and every piece made at Choisy-le-Roi is nothing short than being exceptionally refined, just as this piece demonstrates.
This bonbonniere has been beautifully designed & produced using opalescent glass. Thoughtful designing presents this piece with luxury. The main decorative feature of three rosebuds whilst acting as a finial also provides height, depth and perfect symmetry to what is beneath. The trailing stylized foliage which encircles upon the lid of this piece also acts as a window, allowing us to glimpse at within through a haze of matt-satin frosted panels. The resulting effects are exquisite...
Costebelle, produced a few pattern type vanity items as sets. Perfume bottles for example, together with bonbonniere's and also atomisers, however I am yet to see a recorded set which uses this Roses pattern in any other formation than this piece, and even this piece is rare.
Please study my photographs, for they are the accurate description of this piece over and above my words. You will note that there are a few shell-flake nicks to the pot itself, shown for absolute accuracy. They do not interfere with the visual delight of this piece and they cannot be detected until the glass lid has been removed. Please see photograph No. 4
