This authentic 1930s French Art Deco glass comport is quite probably unique, however I have seen this same pattern as just a bowl and it was attributed to having been produced by d'Avesn and this piece particular piece was most probably produced for Etling...
There are occasions when vintage glass items are interfered with, adapted and altered etc. Vases turned into lamp bases, bowls cut into halves to make wall sconces or drilled to hang as ceiling lights for example, however this piece is sacrosanct & faithful each and every step of the way, and it was produced as is, during the 1930s by quality makers.
This comport only needs to be closely observed to know that each component piece, the chrome metal base, its shoulder support to the glass stem and then the bowl itself were designed to be as one together and the result sensational. That this piece was produced for Etling, is more probable than possible, for Etling were the leading French exponents of bringing together quality design using different media during the Art Deco period, and this comport displays these characteristics with absolute perfection.
The glass bowl & stem have been moulded with enriched manganese oxide to produce a very dark smoky-grey glass which is almost black with hints of purple. The mouldings are crisp and thickly defined which are signs of quality and are also expensive working procedures. The bowl of this piece is a triumph and a visual delight of Modernist Art Deco stying...
... Spiralling outwards like a vortex from the center of the bowl are a perfectly arranged placement of semi-circular discs, each being concave and moulded intaglio and there are over 100 such-like mouldings upon the bowl of this comport. A fabulous optical illusion is displayed, due to the semi-circular discs of different sizes, so as to produce a geometrical pattern which is concentrically uniform to the eye... It is a marvel and an exceptionally large piece of interior display combined with use.
To complement the bowl, the bulbous stem of the comport replicates the above with a solid piece of glass of likewise pattern and then to finish this piece and with true Art Deco styling, stepped chromium metal adds the completeness to present a wonderful display piece which is almost second to none. It is flawless in terms of design paired with quality manufacture as my photographs of this piece surely demonstrate...
I am offering you this piece completely free of any damage...
This is a wise investment piece for the discerning connoisseur, whilst also being a wonderful piece of 1930s French Art Deco for your collection for you to admire, cherish and to adore.
