*** Since listing this luminaire it has since been appraised by one of the leading exponent experts of 20th Century glass in the world. He was unable to provide further information about M Model, as little information exists. However, he confirmed that this piece is unique and exceptionally desirable. He also opinionated that the crack, though stable, has an effect on the value, and so I have adjusted the offer price accordingly ***
Seldom do we get to see such items of exceptional rarity, however here is an opportunity to acquire and to cherish one of most sensational figurative glass lamps of the Art Deco period that was ever produced.
It is quite simply adorable and a major accomplishment using moulded glass, of an incredible 16.5 inches 42cms in height. It is also the only known & recorded example of its type by M Model.
Very little information exists about Maurice Model however research is currently active and on-going at The Princerie Museum at Verdun, North France. A school now occupies the site where Model set-up his `Cristallerie Model' glassworks in c1930 which on 15th June 1940 was destroyed by German bombs, and so out-put lasted for a limited period only of 10 years.
M Model produced press moulded decorative glass for export only and mostly to USA. The glass produced was always of exceptional quality which included a small number of car mascots and other figurines, a limited range of clocks and of course this incredible lamp luminaire.
My own research has established that the central lady is a representation of Penelope, cousin of Helen of Troy. She is flanked by two images of Pan: Agreus and Nomios who are trying to seduce Penelope, under/within the foliage & branches of a pine tree. This imagery has been portrayed in many styles using many artistic mediums, as it is an important representational feature within ancient Greco/Roman mythology, and here it has been beautifully represented in fabulous Art Deco style... using glass.
Please take a while to study the moulded details of this piece, all of which are to the front of the glass. It is stunning work of art and without parallel. From the stylized leaves upon which Agreus, squats to cradle the hand of Penelope, the sensuous curvature of her body, her facial features & plaited hair, whilst to her left sits Nomios, nestled into a cascade of foliage. Each decorative feature has been portrayed and executed with incomparable skill.
The luminaire base & fittings are contemporary and original to the piece, however to comply with safety it has been professionally rewired. There are two lamp-bulb fitments which are both accessible from the back of the piece. The top most bulb holder has an ingenious swivel reflector to make easy work of removing/fixing new bulbs as required. Matt-satin frosting to the back of the glass disguises the bulb fitments, whilst also diffusing the light evenly throughout the piece when in use.
At some point in this lamps history, a too powerful a bulb has been used which has resulted with a horizontal crack that is evident but also stable. It cannot travel or worsen due to the gap-spaces between Penelope and the pair of fauns which prevent this from happening. It is a solid, substantial piece of 1 inch thick crystal and a staggering 16 inches high and as such it is also very strong. The signature: M Model FRANCE is moulded in raised relief front left of base.
It is also a documented piece with good pedigree, as it was sold at one of the most prestigious of auctioneers in the United Kingdom during the 1980s and before I since acquired it for my own collection.
It is an important piece for the connoisseur collector/admirer of quality Art Deco antiques, and just looking at it you can see as to why...
