I would kindly urge you not to allow this piece to pass you by.
It was produced at inarguably the most important opalescent glass factory of the Art Deco period in France, at Choisy-le-Roi and for Etling. Two names which are synonymous to historical quality of superior achievement and design.
There is no maker marks on this piece, however it is the recorded & documented `Sunflower/Dahlia' pattern by Etling, and with an impressive diameter of 30cms – 12 inches it is also the larger of the two sizes produced. I have added a display photograph of an 8.5 inches example (in frosted glass which is also currently available) to provide size & scale.
In terms of its design this is press moulded glass of absolute mathematical precision. It is a magnificent item which uses the qualities of opalescent glass to perfection. The interior of the bowl is smooth. Only the exterior has been pattern moulded to form a single sunflower/dahlia bloom. Three of the flower petals have been thoughtfully designed & moulded to provide feet for the bowl, which raises it to allow optimum light penetration from beneath ...
... Wonderful hues of creamy-white & golden blues shimmer across the surface and also within the glass in ever-changing colours, which are caused by refraction of light wherever or however the piece is suitably displayed.
Etling, also provided this bowl with a metallic edged rim which is so often the case with this French Salon of excellence, who brought together many quality freelance designers of the Art Deco era to produce items of luxury for the high class society. Numerous materials were used and combined by Etling, such as metal, wood, glass & ivory and each having been designed by many leading artisans of the period. This bowl was a highly priced piece at time of manufacture and it is not difficult to see as to why. It's a gem.
It is not a common piece in either size or glass colour type and I am reliably informed that the smaller, clear frosted glass example (as pictured) recently sold on a major online auction for £275 ($428 USD) June 2012.
You are not spending money when you purchase glass such as this, you are investing it, whilst also having the opportunity to cherish and to admire its daily presence...
