French Art Deco Opalescent Glass & Chrome Metal Comport ‘Pavots’ by Sevres Paris c1920s – c1930s

This is a stunning work of art, which though unsigned is a recorded piece of late c1920s in date produced at the Sèvres glassworks in Paris France.

The glassworks were founded, originally as Cristallerie de Sevres during the reign of King Louis XV, and by the 1880s joined with Clichy to produce some of the most important glass ever produced. Many would argue that most of their production was mundane, however ALL glass by Sevres was always of the highest quality.... and there is nothing mundane about this piece!

This piece is also described in the book: `Le Génie Verrier de l'Europe', Giuseppe Cappa, page 423.

The opalescent qualities of this glass are incredible. An entire spectrum of creamy-white, milky-blues & purples combine with golden hues of amber with subtle tones of pinks throughout the glass in a variety of ever-changing colour. It is an absolute sensation and a masterpiece of opalescent glass designing.

Four thickly moulded stylized poppy flower blooms, in highly raised relief, have been geometrically incorporated to the underside of the glass, whilst a broad top rim with its pentagon or pentagagaon 15 faceted edge, frames the moulded pattern to perfection. So strong is the opalescence of this piece that it reflects upon the metal base with mirror-like quality.

The stepped chrome metal base (original to the piece) propels the bowl into the Art Deco era, at the same time as raising the bowl to a height of 4 ½ inches. It is absolutely gorgeous, as my photographs will demonstrate, however no picture can capture or replace glass such as this when in situ.

At 32cms – 12.5 inches in diameter, it is also an impressive sized piece with nice proportions and is undeniably a superb example of interior display wherever it is suitably placed. The condition is fantastic, with just slight age related wear to the metal base as is shown.

If you love opalescent glass then you will simply adore this example for your collection...
