There were no glass factories of the Art Deco depression glass era that could compete with those within Europe, in terms of producing press moulded figurative studies, and in particular center piece flower set displays... Except that is for the Cambridge Glass Company USA.
The items which were designed & produced by the factory during the 1930s can quite often compete with any competitor, as this piece more than adequately demonstrates. It is quite simply an adorable piece which exhibits mastery of design and a complete understanding of glass as a medium. This flower set display of the 1930s is as accomplished as they get... It is adorable.
Collectively known & named as the `Two Kids' pattern, the central decorative element of this piece, features an enchanting representation of a boy, holding aloft a kid goat... There are no other center piece display sets quite like it and its image is captivating in every sense of the word.
It was produced using a variety of glass colour types however I am offering you one of the more desirable of them all... Uranium Green. This piece also carries a moulded patent number: 16 45577
The bowl is also a desirable piece (as most etched engraved Cambridge pieces are) and although I cannot attribute the pattern name, I believe it be Etched 725 pattern, which also produced as a cake stand plate and a rolled-top bowl for example. It is a recognised addition for the `Two Kids' as a center piece set piece, complete. It's a beautiful marriage of sublime eye-catching presence which never fails to please, and then WOW! Look at how this glass radiates & glows if or when lit with UV black light... It is purely sensational.
European glass factories of the period rarely depicted the male or boy figure with such refinement as did the Cambridge Glass Company with a piece such as this. The boy is not represented as being scantily clad, but rather more observant with this subject study which in this instance is a baby kid goat. One and both have been portrayed with serenity calmness and peace which in turn provides a peaceful ambience of unobtrusive tranquility, wherever it is suitably displayed.
CONDITION REPORT: It should be noted that the majority of figurines that were produced by Cambridge are substantial items of glass. They were also integral to their flower-frogs and required extremely high pressure during the manufacturing process to produce them. It is more often than not that stress lines & flaws will be evident upon these pieces, particularly running down through the glass from the flower-frog holes, and this figure is no exception. If you are looking for absolute perfection, then this piece is not for you. One of the stress lines runs through the base of the boy figurine, and although the glass is stable, the internal crack is evident, hence the very low offer price. The bowl however is free of any damage.
