Phenomenal 1930s German Art Deco uranium glass 'Muschel' pattern center piece display by Walther & Sohne

There was only one factory in the world of Art Deco press moulded glass, with the capability of producing such incredible designs as this incredible piece: Walther & Sohne, Germany, who were inarguably the finest producers of their period using press moulded glass techniques. In terms of affordability & variety matched with quality. Walther quite literally lead the field.

Walther & Sohne, had a total and complete understanding of moulded glass as a medium. Using depth or a subtleness of colour, combined with the thickness of the glass, to refract light throughout each featured element of the design, with an amazing degree of observation.

Here for your appraisal is one of the most incredible Walther examples of the period. It has undeniable beauty & desirable appeal and its uranium glass qualities are stunning.

The pattern appears in the Walther pattern book of circa 1935 as `MUSCHEL' (shell) and no other Art Deco press moulded glass bowl display comes anywhere close to it, in terms of its fabulous form and styling.

Walther designers, returned once again to an oceanic mystical decorative scene of a mermaid which is not dissimilar to the Walther glass `Nymphen' mermaid pattern items, many of which are also currently available here in my shop.

The `Nymphen' pattern mermaid, is an impressive quality item of its own, however Walther went more than just one step further to produce THIS Mushcel pattern mermaid, by propelling her into a size of phenomenal proportions and with detailing of exceptional Art Deco dynamics using glass.

As can be noted, there are two separate components to this amazing center piece, a base stand and a bowl of uranium glass perfection.

The base is fabulously sinuous and it possesses movement seldom seen upon such glass of its period. It has been wonderfully moulded as a beautifully detailed mermaid, which almost metamorphoses into a wave of the sea that in turn then becomes the base support for the fabulous bowl. Walther thought of everything when creating these ingenious works of Art Deco art.

The crest of a wave for example, curls & scrolls forwards to provide a resting point for the bowl when in place. It is a remarkably clever incorporation to the design as it also ensures perfect stability & balance for the bowl to contain fruits, or a cake for example, whilst also affording the entire piece with a symmetry which is absolutely sublime...

I kindly urge you to study my photographs of this sensational item, as they form a major part of its description. It is an absolute joy to behold.

CONDITION REPORT: The condition of this set is excellent. A microscopic nick can be felt upon the inner front edge of the base which supports the bowl and there is a small shell-flake to the inside edge of the bowl however this in no way detracts and is mentioned for accuracy purposes only. The above can barely be felt or seen.
