This gorgeous bowl was designed by Cesari, a name of which relatively little is known or understood. It has been established that Cesari glass was most probably produced at Choisy-le-Roi, and for Etling, however it is still yet to be confirmed with attribution whether or not Cesari was a designer, a maker or even a retailer mark...
Further confusion exists with this bowl pattern.
Cesari examples are also known to be signed, or they can feature a man's head to the centre of the piece. Please see my listed example in opalescent glass: item number: JJ795
No other bowls or vases etc. have appeared which display this central feature. It could be the mark of a specific event perhaps or was used to mark a special occasion, which is most likely to be the case. Many ideas have been put forward which of course all help and contribute to give this piece an attribution, and it is thought that these pattern bowls represent 'les vins du postillon' (wines of the postilion) but as to whom the face in the centre is or what it signifies, further research is required...
Her is an example that is signed by Cesari, and it uses a wonderful glass colour of smoky - amber tint. It has been beautifully moulded to the underside with overlapping leaves & vines and bunches of grapes in raised relief which in turn become a tripod of feet for the bowl.
The condition of this piece is close to mint. There is the most miniscule sized pin-pick nick to the outside edge rim, and that is all, and it is mentioned here for accuracy of description only. It by no means detracts from the beauty of this Cesari piece. It is a worthy item for your collection and is also relatively scarce to find in this colour variant...
