... You can always rely upon Walther & Sohne to capture a subject with refined definition and quality using press moulded glass techniques. Very few (if any) German glass factories of the Art Deco era can match them or rival their incredible achievements. Walther deliver, and they deliver better than most, as this incredible three part center piece amply demonstrates ...
Peter Pan has been portrayed within the arts ever since its early beginnings as a novel that was written by J M Barrie, circa 1902 and subsequently published in c1911 as Peter & Wendy. Walt Disney (c1953) and much later Steven Spielberg (c1991) recaptured our imaginations of this wonderful novel with their own interpretation of Peter Pan using animation and film however during the years of Art Deco, Walther & Sohne of Germany, captured Peter & Wendy using press moulded glass, with incredible movement and glass making skill.
FLÖTENSPIELER & SEEROSEN (Flute player & Water Lilies as the piece is originally catalogued by Walther) has since become known amongst collectors as a having been influenced by the J M Barrie novel, Peter & Wendy, and it is not difficult to see as to why with this pure Fairy Tale subject of ancient historical legend...
Here for example, we see Pan (Peter) trying to seduce Penelope (Wendy) whilst playing the flute (as depicted within ancient Grecian and Roman mythology) and Walther have captured and interpreted this scene with charm, elegance and beauty using glass... To emphasise the subject matter even further, Walther have incorporated Rabbits into their design, which in some cultures & folklores symbolize `Tricksters' `Abundance' and `Fertility.'
It is a large and impressive centre piece, and as one would expect from the leading exponents of German Art Deco press moulded glass, each component part has been produced with quality & refinement. The bowl for example is one of the most beautiful of all Walther pattern bowl types, which at 13 inches diameter is also one of their largest. Thickly moulded around the underside of the bowl, is a fluidity of stylized water lilies & buds, upon lily pads within a swirling whirlpool of water. Incorporated into these designed features, is a tripod of feet which raises the bowl to allow for optimum light penetration from beneath. It is a wonderful example of Art Deco press moulded glass which uses Walther's remarkable colour-type of uranium green glass to perfection... LOOK at how this glass glows under UV black light conditions, for example. The entire is as spectacular as it can get.
The `SEEROSEN' pattern bowl is a remarkable stand-alone piece in its own right, however it is also the correct pattern type for the FLÖTENSPIELER central figure. These bowls were also used to accompany the `Nelson' sailing ship center piece: `Segelschiff' an example of which is currently available here from my shop.
There are three separate components to this set, two of which have been described above. The third piece is the glass flower frog into which Peter & Wendy comfortably display. Once again it uses the same pattern-type as the `Nelson' sailing ship by Walther, and it is a large 6 inch diameter sturdy piece of glass, with 12 pre-formed holes to accommodate floral displays if required.
The collective interest in Walther glass is vast and worldwide. It is not difficult to see as to why. Center pieces such as this quickly disappear into collections and their demand outstrips their supply. It is never too early to invest in the works by this factory and sooner, rather than later, should be considered at all times if you wish to acquire one of the marvelous examples of German Art deco press moulded glass works of genius. I am offering two of these from my collection, the other uses Walther's wonderful colour of `peach'. I would urge you not to let them pass you by at their current offer price.
CONDITION REPORT: The only evident damage is as shown upon the flower frog, which is an internal stable fracture. This has been reflected on the offer price which currently provides exceptional value for your investment.
