One could argue that nobody else can compare to the designs of R Lalique using press moulded glass techniques... None of course except for Pierre D'Avesn, as is testimony to his employment by `The Master Genius'
It is incredible and also astonishing when one considers that Lalique himself was well into his 50s when his first recognisable vase & bowl patterns & designs were introduced for example, many years following his success as a Jeweller and perfume bottle designer maker.
D'Avesn however worked for Lalique from aged just 14 years, and by aged 24 years had designed many of Laliques famous pieces: `Tourbillons' and `Serpent' perhaps being the most desirable and highly priced models even to this day. D'Avesn undeniably did much more than simply contributing to the glass-making world of his era... He was paramount with establishing it.
By aged aged 29 years he was Manager & principal designer at `Daum Freres' at their Croismare glassworks in Luneville in France, where he remained until c1936. One year later he took over the Management of `Verlys' until the outbreak of WWII c1940 and still aged just 39 years... This man was a genius as is evident by the incredible works he left behind, not only for other glass factories but also as a freelance at Cristallerie de Choisy-le-Roi (Sèvres).
D'Avesn is UP THERE with the likes of R Lalique, Sabino and any other glass working genius of the c20th, as this stunning charger by him proves with abundance...
Please study my photographs of this sensational piece. They form a major part of its description and they cannot deny the unquestionable importance coupled with quality Art Deco period craftsmanship. It is an absolute sensation using moulded glass techniques.
The design is an obvious announcement of D'Avesns years spent with Rene Lalique. It uses a theme of stylized dahlia flower blooms as the predominant feature to perfection. Each flower has been defined differently and they display their very own characteristics, which in turn overlap & under-lap together with large stylized leaves which culminate to provide a tripod of supports for the charger. It is a triumphant example of D'Avesn design.
Only the underside of the bowl has been moulded with pattern, most of which has been matt-satin frosted, whilst other areas have been fire polished to accentuate the design.
The condition of the piece is excellent. There are no chips, cracks or flea-bites. It rings like a bell when tapped with a fingernail and is damage free. It carries a full signature moulded in raised block capitals: P. D'AVESN FRANCE
It's a true beauty...
