Remarkable Red-Ashay / Hoffman Designed Uranium Green Glass Car Hood Mascot 'Speed Girl' pattern by Desna
An early exporter of Desna glass, was Herman George Ascher, who went on to move to England to develop the company: H.G. Ascher Ltd, trading under the name of Red-Ashay, producing very high quality glass car mascots to directly compete with those by R Lalique during the early 1930s and using numerous designs by Hoffman and other important Bohemian designers of the period...
Here is one such example. A stunning car mascot using uranium green glass which was designed by Hoffman for Red-Ashay. Its pattern name is `Speed Girl' and is one of the most desirable of the 30 Red-Ashay pattern mascots produced. It is a sensational item of pure solid uranium green crystal and its proportions & dimensions are exceptionally beautiful and dynamic.
It has a pose that epitomises speed, and it shows the head of stylized Art Deco lady with her hair flowing out in a wavy-stream behind her suspended in motion. This post-war example has been produced directly from antique Red-Ashay moulds, and uses the remarkable qualities of uranium green glass to absolute perfection.
I have used one of my photographs to illustrate the exact precision of this piece, together with a Red-Ashay example for comparison purposes. Either of which are sensational.
It is one of two mascot patterns designed by Red-Ashay currently available from my collection and it is a dream of a piece.
Pre-WWII examples are very scarce. It is a rare and desirable pattern, one sold at Bonhams Auction in c2008 for £2,765 GBP $4,387 USD. Red-Ashay/Ascher Ltd, went out of business with the outset of WWII, and so these examples are far and few between, as it was only produced in a limited run.
This post-war example is an exception, and is but a fraction in terms of cost, and as can be noted is as faithful to the original, as the original its very self. After all, it has been produced from the very exact same antique moulds!
The condition of this mascot is mint. It has been set upon a solid piece of quality black crystal and it cannot topple over. This mascot is substantial & very strong for an item of glass, for its intention was very much indeed to be placed upon the hood-bonnet of a quality motorcar... Can you imagine... What a beautiful sight that would have been!
It is no small wonder as to why it is today that we appreciate these incredibly accomplished glass items with so much adoration. This is a wise investment piece... I would urge you to purchase it whilst you can. The value of this piece is firmly established and it is destined to grow...
