Cobalt Blue Crystal Glass Peacock Head Tete de Paon Car Hood Mascot by Lalique

The Motor Mascots designed by Lalique achieve a rare combination of beauty & distinction and among all the famous artists in glass there has never been such a consummate master as René Lalique. He introduced this particular model pattern 'Tête de Paon' (Peacock Head) circa 1928 and what a splendid designed piece it is.

Tête de Paon shows the proud head of peacock in glaring profile with a crested feather emerging from the crown like a stylized lotus flower. The neck of the bird is bowed backwards slightly and the beak is pointing down. It is a mesmerising image which captivates and it has an appeal that is timeless...

René Lalique original examples of Tête de Paon, command high prices and they can exchange hands for as much as $40,000 USD. Post war examples were not reintroduced until the beginning of this century and for a limited time only Crystal Lalique reproduced and faithfully captured their namesakes' masterful creation in all of its original glory... and here is such a piece.

It possesses the exact same finite qualities of the original, together with the same size dimensions and of course the almost unsurpassed quality of the glass itself. Tête de Paon, retailed for $1085 USD £673 GBP and so only relatively few could afford these luxury items, however here is your opportunity to acquire.

As with like most Lalique car mascots, the size of this piece comes as a very pleasant surprise. Larger than the majority of paperweight patterns, Tête de Paon is an impressive 7 x 3 inches and has been produced using over 4lbs of phenomenal cobalt blue crystal.

René Lalique did not only possess a richness of imagination and skill, he had an unerring sense of form and an extraordinary faculty for exploiting the colour and texture of the glass itself. His versatility was astonishing. He could be delicate, fantastic, bizarre or vigorous, yet his style always harmonised with the subject, and the originality of a true artist marks all of his work.

I have seen numerous Lalique mascots in situ, upon the hoods of motorcars as were intended and each makes a glorious statement. They are also surprisingly strong and robust when one considers that they have been made from glass, however many of the original Peacock Head mascots have suffered from irreparable damage to their crest and/or beak. There are no such detractions upon this example. It is in pristine good-as-new condition throughout, which is no doubt due to it having sat in a display cabinet as opposed to the hood of my car!

At night, I enhance the charm of my glass mascots by illuminating them from underneath, just as was the case when firstly designed. Chromed metal housings for Lalique mascots often concealed dynamo powered lamp fitments which shone through the glass with evermore increasing brilliance determined by the speed of the car driver! I would strongly recommend the purchaser of this piece to invest in such a lamp stand.

It is never too late to collect the works of Lalique, but the golden rule is: `Sooner rather than later' (please see bottom of this page listing for other original car mascots by R Lalique currently available from my private collection)

This mascot represents very wise investment. Try finding one at this offer price in say five years from now?
