This is a gorgeous example of French Opalescent glass from the Art Deco period, produced by Verlux France.
There are several schools of thought which surround the glass by Verlux. In later years the factory became associated with the production of glass for culinary use as well as jars & bottles for the food industry, trading as BSN (Boussois Souchon Neuvesel). Prior to this however, accurate information has yet to be firmly established, but it is also believed that Verlux produced their opalescent glass at Choisy–le-Roi, and that it was a second signature used by Etling.
When it comes to Opalescent glass produced from this period, nothing can quite compete with the French glass factories based at Choisy-le-Roi. The opalescent qualities of this glass are always exceptional, as this large charger undeniably demonstrates.
Moulded to the underside of the piece, are six cock & hen pheasants in high relief which encircle a decorative inner ring of stylized foliage. An unusual feature upon such bowls, is the addition of a concentric rings which provides a sturdy base for the piece, as opposed to the birds themselves, as is more commonly noted upon bowl examples produced by other factory makers of the period. The addition of this base, allows the birds to be raised higher upon the bowl, and in a more natural pose, with their long tail feathers trailing behind them as can be seen in nature. It is a very clever and thought-out design by Verlux, and the entire piece makes for a wonderful display wherever it is suitably placed.
Of the previous examples of this particular pattern bowl that I have handled, most will be noted to have unpolished rims, which are rough to the touch. One can therefore assume that these bowls were intended to be edged with metal, outside of house, by the retailers. This could also account for the Etling to Verlux association perhaps.
The white metal band which is evident upon this example is original and contemporary to the piece, it is also seamless and without any pitting or corrosion.
French opalescent glass has not faltered in terms of its collective appeal, it has always remained popular and pieces soon disappear into private hands to become cherished items of wise investment. I am offering you opportunity to acquire this piece and at relatively low cost for such a beautiful example...
