The beauty of this piece is undeniable. Its technical achievement is almost unsurpassed and it displays a quality and an appeal which is timeless.
Incredibly for a piece such as wonderful as this, the designer or its factory maker remains unknown. It is a noted pattern type of its period however its provenance is still as yet to be accurately established.
It is inarguably one of the most beautiful of all Art Deco moulded glass center piece figural displays, designed & produced as a two piece comport.
To mould the glass base as is, for example, is an accomplishment which could only ever be attained by a glass factory of major importance and total understanding of glass as a working medium.
Most, if not ALL, press moulded glass requires to be released quickly from its mould before the glass has cooled or solidified to its eventual state. In view of this, imagine if you will the complexity of skill required to ensure that no distortion or collapse occurs to any parts of this glass. The perfection of the round frame which encircles the lady central is a phenomenal work of art in its own right. It is perfection and exceptionally appealing when viewed from any angle.
Then what about the lady! She possesses gracefulness and as finite qualities of moulded features which can compare to any other factory of its period.
It is one of two of these examples from my collection, both of which are currently available. I have photographed them both together here (without their comport bowls) for display purposes however you may wish to view the green example within its own page listing to make comparison.
This amber glass example is truly stunning. EVERY Art Deco glass collection surely warrants & deserves one of these. They possess remarkable quality and an eye catching appeal that is timeless. They are also wise investment items and very desirable.
The development of these `pegged bowl' examples allowed for gracefulness of the subject matter. The only alternative would be a large flat disc of glass, to support the accompanying bowl. This would quite often interfere with the overall design of a piece and so the `pegged bowl' offers these wonderful figural items to appear effortless as if only supporting the bowl, using their hands.
I would advise against displaying any of these pegged bowl examples in direct sunlight. During the heat of day, the thickness of the glass peg can heat up sufficiently to cause the thinner glass of the `candle stick-type' holder, to crack. Caution and prevention is far better than cure!
Many of these wonderful items have suffered due to the above however please do not imagine these items to be any more fragile than any other glass. Displayed appropriately and away from any direct heat source they are exceptionally stable, as were meant and intended for use to hold fruit, center stage for display.
I can add no more, save for the size and the condition of this spectacular example of Art Deco press moulded glass...
Its condition is pristine & mint. I have had several examples of this particular piece and I am happy to say that this example is one of the best, in terms of its amazing depth of amber colour and the absolute crispness of its mouldings. I would consider this piece to be an early pressing from its mould.
There are no chips, cracks flea-bites or nicks, not even to the peg of the bowl which is uncommon. The entire is simply adorable for your collection and a complete joy to behold and to cherish.
