Enchanting English Victorian Opal Lustre Iridescent Glass Spiral Optic Posy Vase by John Walsh Walsh. c1880

I adore this glass by John Walsh Walsh, for its attractiveness & quality. It's a gem of a piece...

Walsh Walsh was an eminent designer of his era, who from the outset of his career insisted upon very high standards of quality. His contribution to the glass of the era has often been overlooked, but never underestimated, and here for your appraisal is a beautiful example of his historical work. These relatively early items produced at his factory, are quite delicate & fragile, hence their scarcity when in tip-top condition such as this enchanting piece. It is mint & pristine, which is quite something for glass that is in excess of 100 years old. It's a real beauty... without one single blemish.

When I hold a piece such as this, it almost `speaks to me' whilst I view and study the ways with which it was produced.

It would have been free blown into a pegged mould to provide it with a vertical bulbous shape and to decorate its surface with optic spirals of wrythen pattern. The wavy-rim of the vase, also displays further details as were applied by the hand that produced it... Having flared out the rim to a proportionate size, it was then folded down at intervals starting if you like at 6 o'clock and then repeated above at 12. It was then sub-divided as precisely as is possible whilst also keeping the shape on a horizontal axis. The glass was then afforded with opal lustred iridescence to all surfaces. It is utterly sublime.

It is also an unobtrusive piece which can blend in amongst a collection to add additional charm or it can quite happily stand alone as a beautiful example of English Victorian decorative glass. It is truly exquisite and you will adore its presence, coupled with its obvious value as a wise investment.

CONDITION REPORT: It is in pristine & mint condition for your collection. There are no chips, cracks or flea-bites. It is perfect in every way. Ground and polished pontil to its base.
