Gorgeous German 1930s Art Deco Uranium Glass Two Piece Comport by Walther & Sohne
In terms of design matched with affordable quality using press moulded glass techniques, no other German factory can quite compare to or compete with the incredible achievements that Walther & Sohne introduced during the hey-days of the Art Deco period. Each piece is a sheer joy to behold, just as this comport more than adequately demonstrates. This is German Art Deco press moulded glass at its pinnacle best.
Walther & Sohne, used the aquatic theme of stylized fish, upon a wide variety of their glass, and with an almost unmatched perfection. From candle stick holders, lamps and complete vanity trinket sets this was a design of which this factory excelled in.
This comport comprises just two of the above items, as were intended to be displayed at time of manufacture.
The base is the pattern name of SONNENFISCHE (sun fish) and numerous bowl-types were offered for the base and made available as required, and here is just one of them: NEPTUN, a Walther pattern bowl which by itself is a desirable bowl indeed, for its flexibility in terms of its display possibilities. It is a bowl pattern which can be adapted to suit other comports produced by Walther, or as a stand-alone piece in its own right.
I have provided a photograph of a complete Neptun pattern comport center piece, which although is none the less attractive, does not compare to the desirability of the Neptun bowl when in situ with the Sonnenfische base. It should be noted that each base pattern produced by Walther, could accommodate many of their bowl pattern types to suit individual requirement.
Also of special note is the size difference between the Neptun & Sonnenfische base patterns. This can be observed by the addition of a frilled glass base to the base part of Sonnenfische, to provide more height and size of scale to this piece, which enables a wider variety of bowl patterns (than those of Neptun) to be used upon it as a two piece comport set.
The salient feature of this comport is of course the wonderful fish, which have been superbly represented using press moulded glass. It is an image which displays outstanding levels of movement in realistic form, from the meticulous details of the fish scales for example, to the flowing fantail & fins and facial expression portrayed upon the fish. Each has been stylized in true Art Deco fashion to epitomise the era. Such is the work of Walther & Sohne, who inarguably produced the most incredible press moulded glass comports of the mid c20th.
This sensational example also benefits from having been made using Walther & Sohne's uranium green glass, which as can be seen, is a glass type of outstanding quality and it propels this piece once again into a league of its own when subjected to UV black light. Furthermore, this particular example is one of the finest in my entire collection in terms of UV reaction It is sublime . . .
As one would expect from glass of this quality, it is both a gorgeous interior display piece together with benefiting from intention of use. Nothing quite prepares you when first seeing the amazing works by Walther & Sohne, in terms of their size paired with quality & strength. The bowl has an impressive 31cms – 12 inches diameter for example! This is a comport which can cope with heavy fruit displays or can be also be used as a float bowl as required, however no matter how or where this comport is suitably placed & displayed it is a dream of a piece within any interior setting.
Quality, subject-matter, expression & detail all combined with use, remained paramount to this incredibly refined German factory, as is evident by the glass that they produced. I would urge you truly STUDY this piece...
In fact, take more than just a quick a peep at ANY Walther glass within my shops listings (if only to make comparison) as each & every item produced by Walther of this period, borders upon being second to none.
The entire comport is also in mint condition for your collection save for one tiny nibble to the base of the bowl only. It is quite simply a stunning work of art from the Art Deco era, using press moulded uranium glass to its pinnacle best . . .
