English Art Deco 1930s Cast Iron & Copper Lustre Enamel Fireplace Surround
Please kindly note that any areas of white are caused by camera flash & enamel iridescence. This fireplace is in fabulous lustred condition throughout.
It is grand & impressive and yet understated and unobtrusive in size. It is also complete, including its original coal & log saver and ash retaining gates. Make no mistake... This amazing piece is a fully function able, outside of its obvious decorative appeal.
Please study my photographs of this remarkable Art Deco period fireplace surround, as they illustrate its captivating beauty whilst also forming the major part of its description. Also currently available and listed separately is the accompany fireplace tool set. Please see my photograph.
The fireplace comprises of three separate component parts, which each come together as one unified feature as intended. The three parts consist of: A slide-out ash/dust draw cover & handle; A high log/coal retainer/saver which enables stacking to provide more heat (which is removable if not required during use) And the main feature front display...
It has the advantage of being simplicity itself to install and to fit. To the reverse of each Knight, left & right, is an integral hook. All that is required to install the piece is to screw-fit two eye-let rings into the wall, which are hidden once the fire-front is hooked into them. It is also surprisingly light-weight, lighter in weight for example than some of my glass items and so it is suitable for numerous interior settings: Caravan Motor Homes, Boats etc. each could benefit from this fabulous focal feature, and as with all of my shop items it can be shipped to overseas customers appropriately & successfully and at relatively low cost...
Marvellously represented is the Portcullis of an Art Deco stylized English fortified castle, which conjures visions of King Arthur at Camelot perhaps, flanked by two of his knights, each of them bowing, as if to be at rest upon Excalibur...
These c12th decorative elements continue, with rivets, studs & stylized Fleur de Lis, all of which have been enamelled with a rich golden iridescent lustre, the likes of which is totally unique...
Obviously this fireplace and also its companion tool set (as is listed separately) were produced to withstand constant severe heat. Therefore only the frontal appearance & surfaces have been lustre enamelled, whilst their back parts are untouched and as casted & founded from solid iron. The fire front has a moulded letter `V' which is a factory/foundry mark that I am unable to identify.
Despite my own working knowledge and understanding of lustred enamel work, I am still as yet to discover how these items were produced with such beauty and still remain as such, as each and every piece is unaffected when subjected to intensity of heat. One must not forget that the fireplace would have been in use, as much as 24/7, from its date of manufacture and yet it still retains its wonderful polished lustre to the frontal exterior surface.
In `normal practice' and in most other instances this decorative enamel would have quite simply: melted, darkened, quickly disappeared and soon gone, leaving nothing else but the cast iron itself. Only the log retaining gate has age related wear, as this item alone was not enamelled at time of manufacture.
This is a very wise investment piece for its price... You are not spending you are investing, when purchasing original vintage items such as this.
