This three piece glass vase garniture by Bagley, using matt-frosted Uranium Green glass, is inarguably one of the rarest of items from their repertoire in terms of its completeness. Neither can I think of any other English Art Deco press moulded glass vases as iconic as this pattern shape by Bagley.
They epitomise the Art Deco style and their formulated design was used by many in the art world as the very symbol of Art Deco. Pottery items; stone masonry; wood; buildings and interior design, each took direct inspiration from this marvellous `Grantham' Art Deco designed vase.
This stunning three piece set, was produced by the most prolific producers of pressed glass in England, during the mid-20th century: The Crystal Glass Company, Knottingly, (Bagley) who established themselves as pioneers of classic 1930s styling to become hugely collective throughout the world, which in the main was the responsibility of the amazing Art Deco designs produced by Alexander Hardie Williamson, and this vase pattern is the most iconic & famous of them all. The `Grantham' pattern vase.
These vase styles disappear into collections relatively quickly, never to surface again for many years... And to just look at them, one can understand as to why.
`Grantham' was produced in three sizes and in a variety of colours which were either translucent `Crystaltynt' or matt satin frosted, and any or each are desirable as single stand-alone items. As matched pairs they are scarce. The largest vase flower set, complete with its glass frog is particularly rare to find outside of private hands, but a complete garniture such as THIS is very exceptional indeed.
The `Grantham' pattern is more than just a work of art. It is a sensation, as I am certain that all who fortunate enough to possess even one, would undoubtedly agree. The larger vase however, displays a phenomenal presence, and was the only vase of the pattern that was provided with its very own all-glass flower frog, except in much later years when smaller glass frogs were introduced which could be purchased as separate items only, and would simply `nestle' into the vase. The larger `Grantham' vase however, was produced with internally moulded supports for the flower frog to snugly sit into position. These large flower frogs themselves are a much sought after piece by collectors, as most have suffered from being lost or damaged beyond repair.
If I may, I shall take this opportunity to re-print a chapter from one of my very recent listings of a pair of small `Grantham' vases which I had located in a box belonging to my late Mother... I ended the listing with this following paragraph: "I would kindly urge you not to allow this pair of original Art Deco `Grantham' vases to pass you by. It is unlikely that another pair like these shall be found in a box... ?"
I might as well have eaten my own words, for you can perhaps imagine my surprise upon the discovery of this sensational garniture... In another box here at my home.
My previous listing also stated, and quite correctly: `... I had not realised that I had this pair, as just like with many of my shop items they have been found in a box. It is an on-going painful, but also an enjoyable surprise at times to be going through my late parents' estate. My mother in particular was a lover of glass too and these vases belonged to her. Her personal favourite colour of glass was pink and I have an identical pair as these which belonged to her which I keep on permanent display.
We each of us perhaps have our own preferences and favourite colour types as collectors and admires of glass, as to why perhaps my mother kept these away from view? I never quite know what I shall find next at times, as to why so many new listings can appear in my shop at any given time! You can imagine my excitement upon discovering this pair of gems, which I am now offering to you to cherish and enjoy.'
The above vases are indeed very much a pair of gems, and just as with all of the `Grantham' pattern vases that I have listed and just as I have stated: `They are each & all rapidly purchased and they vanish with the blink of an eye.' And Justifiable this is so too.
They have the most incredible Art Deco `Odeon' & `Stepped Sunray' shaping & form and present themselves with historical originality. These vases mark a turning point in the world of 1930's Art Deco design and they have an appeal that is very precious & timeless.
As you can see, this fabulous three piece garniture has been produced using one of the most beautiful of Bagley glass colour shades: Uranium Green. The entire then matt-satin frosted to soften the emphasis of the style & form ever more. Each piece is exceptionally tactile, and just look at how they glow when subjected to UV black light to propel themselves even more with their captivating beauty.
I am very almost reluctant to even consider parting with this set...
And please also understand how reluctant that I am at times, to open yet another BOX!
The future custodian of this garniture will be a very wise and also a very fortunate person to be sure, and of that much I am certain. This paged listing is unquestionably something very special indeed for your collection. Particularly at this current Sale Price. It is an irreplaceable Bagley Glass Bonanza and the condition of each piece is more than just good, and as now follows.
CONDITION: The two smaller vases are in mint condition and are both free of any damage. The large vase, has two minute chips, one to the corner of its base and one to the outermost corner points at its top. There are minor nibbles to the flower frog, but that is all...
