French Art Deco Recorded & Signed Pattern 146, Choisy–le–Roi Opalescent Glass Bowl With Ebony Handles by Etling

`Etling,' quite often becomes a mash of confusion in terms of the glass which bears its name and its association, for unlike most other major French glass producing names of the era, Etling were not entirely devoted to glass alone, but were rather an embracing `Society' of quality commissioned items using a wide range of high quality working mediums, such as Ivory, Ceramics, Bronze and of course glass. Etling, in other words was a high-class Salon, rather than a factory.

Founded in Paris France at 29 Rue Paradis, circa 1909, Edmond Laurent Etling, used only the very high-class & top freelance designers of the period to adorn his shop with the most incredible objects of its era...

...Outstanding Statuary figurine works by Chiparus, Colinet, Guiraud-Riviere and Lucille Sevin and many others for example, were saleable commissions at Etling as too were also phenomenal examples of glass items designed by Sevres, Geza Hiecz and Georges Beal, to name just a few. Most, if not all Etlings' opalescent glassware from these designers, was produced and made at the Choisy-leRoi glassworks, tantamount in Paris France as a glass producing area of complete and total quality, as this wonderful large & shallow opalescent glass charger bowl, justifiably signifies & demonstrates.

This item is a sensational piece from my collection being offered to you here, and is a featured piece by Etling, number 146 as listed in the Choisy - le - Roi catalogue.

The entire output of Etling glass, was solely produced during the Art Deco period and the company did not continue following WWII, with only Sevres, reproducing many Etling glass female figurines as late as the 1970s.

The bowl has a moulded maker mark and it also carries its moulded corresponding pattern number: ETLING FRANCE 146

In places, the glass is a staggering 1 inch thick, and the beautifully moulded patterns are at eight different levels of glass thickness. All of the moulded patterns are upon the base of the bowl.

Beginning with the background, sprays of stylized stemmed-flowers curl outwards from beneath overlapping & under-lapping lily pads and large flower petals. Further decorative elements have been incorporated into the design, of three piles of daisies & peony flower heads which each culminate to become a tripod of feet.

The resulting effect is phenomenal and as good as it gets.

Neither one of the three decorative moulded features are the same. Each are different, so as to provide an underside to the bowl that is more like a collage of artistry than of glass. It is quite simply breath taking and its opalescent qualities are almost unsurpassed, and all of the glass is also in pristine mint condition.

There are no nicks, chips or fleabites and no bruising etc. to any of the feet or other areas of this stunning piece.

It should also be noted, that Etling glass items such as this charger, were produced as is at the time of manufacture. Etling utilised and incorporated many working mediums upon numerous pattern types of their glass which is almost a unique feature of Etling glass in particular. The bringing together of the metal rim and the wooden handles are original fitments.

Both of the handles compliment the bowl perfectly, with their fabulously handmade Art Deco forms, of globes & cones which have interconnected by yellow metal ferrules. As one would expect of such an opulent item, only the finest quality of extremely costly & desirable Macassar ebony has been used and turned by lathe to perfection.

This important piece is an obvious choice for the connoisseur however it is affordable and accessible to any single one very fortunate & lucky purchaser, which at this offer price also offers exceptional value for investment and return.
