LARGE 1930s French Art Deco Opalescent Glass Bowl `Chrysanthemum' pattern by Andre Hunebelle

The opalescent glass that was produced by Andre Hunebelle, compares in quality to that of Etling, Verlys, D'Avesn, Sabino and also R Lalique, in terms of its opalescent qualities of the period.

The above is not a false claim, as is evident, and this bowl is no exception to that rule. The sheer quality of this piece is quite simply remarkable. The beauty of this glass bowl instantly captivates and draws the eye with its milky-blues & creamy-golden-amber colours which constantly change by movement, throughout this magnificently produced item by Andre Hunebelle (1896 - 1985)

Born in Paris, and also a close friend of Marc Lalique, Hunebelle designed pressed glass inspired by the work of Marc's father Rene Lalique, whom needs little introduction. Hunebelle,a genius of mathematics and a lover of what we now call Art Deco, exhibited his first collection of glass in circa 1927. It was an instant success, which provided him popular acclaim and his glass (although similar to the works of Lalique) retained their very own unique styles & identities. They relied upon in the main, decorative elements of stylized abstract forms & geometrical themes due to Hunebelles' master hood at mathematical design, which of course was very much the fashion of Art Deco and of the period, which is forever timeless, as I am sure you would agree.

The pattern name of this bowl is `Chrysanthemum' as featured & shown in the Hunebelle glass catalogues of the period, and what a truly beautiful example of French Art Deco press moulded Opalescent glass it is...

The bowl, although large is also heavy, due to the costly additions of colouring agents used & required to produce this amazing glass type and only `factories, of quality' produced `quality of glass.'

Varying amounts of Lead oxide; Phosphorus pentoxide; White arsenic and Quicklime, together with many other ingredients makes this glass weighty whilst also achieving its incredible appearance.

The bowl has been thickly moulded (to its exterior surface) with a geometrically stylized chrysanthemum flower-head which radiates outwards from the center of the bowl like a starburst-firework. The resulting effect provides a magnificence of optics & ever-changing appeal. This is a superb example of its type which will never disappoint, no matter where it is suitably displayed within any interior setting.

Satin frosted to its underside and a smoothly polished interior are further features of this wonderful bowl, for they provide additional qualities to French opalescent glass, by enhancing the creamy-golden blues & whites to make the opal hues become absolutely stunning.

This is a French 1930's Art Deco glass bowl of importance and a wise investment piece for collectors and admirers alike. It also rings like a bell and is offered to you here in mint condition.

The bowl has a Moulded mark to its base center: MADE IN FRANCE, which is by no means a major issue as most items by Hunebelle, were maker marked using a wide variety of methods and in many different ways and in fact, the most common examples of his works can be noted to include moulded capitals upon their bases: A.HUNEBELLE - FRANCE or within other areas the very glass itself. Other items were also provided with nothing else but a paper label for example, which of course over time have perished or been lost.

Hunebelle items can appear without any maker/factory/ or county of origin marks at all and/or simply marked with FRANCE; MADE IN FRANCE and numerous other combinations and so attributing his work can often be confusing, however his catalogues of the period are invaluable to assist with establishing a definite provenance, such as this amazing & original "chrysanthemum" beauty...
