Amazing 1930s Czechoslovakian Art Deco LARGE 2 piece Depression Glass Flower Set Vase by Rosice.
It was produced in Czechoslovakia, by Rosice,a glass factory of history which like many others had a very chequered and turbulent existence since its establishment in circa 1920. Within one year, the factory ceased to operate and closed due to financial collapse. It remained closed down for eight more years before being purchased by Václav Hrdina, who quickly established new glass products for export to Italy, Switzerland and England, and within two years reached its peak of development with sensational designs of Art Deco forms, such as this wonderful two piece flower vase set, but Rosice faced further crisis during the years of worldwide recession and closed once again circa 1931.
Production re-started again in circa 1934,only to be shut down for the third time within the space of one year, due to lack of finance. Its factory third owner,Bedrich Vrtal,re-invested and began pressed glass production yet again, with a new series of designs for export, destined for Canada,USA,Australia and Africa, however production declined during 1939 and despite surviving the war years and achieving regrowth,by 1965 Rosice, as a company, came under state ownership as a part of the collective Sklo Union. Its operation closed completely circa 1996 when all glass production was shut down...
... And so here we have an example piece produced by a glass factory, which despite all of its problems, still managed to produce some of the most amazingly stylized decorative press moulded glass of its period.
The vase is much larger than it appears in my photographs,as it stands at a height of 6 inches and its top is 11 inches wide from point to point.
I personally have (and continue to do so on occasion) display such Art Deco vases & bowls upside down too. This piece (as is shown in my photographs) is very much favourably suited for this purpose, and it looks absolutely amazing no matter how it is displayed, combined with a numerous variety of appropriate additions so as to form a fantastic statement piece, which as you can see, makes it "stand-out from the crowd."
The glass flower frog is also unique to this vase and unlike any other which were designed to make easy work of floral arrangements. There is no other vase set quite like it,by any known factory of the Art Deco period using press moulded glass techniques.
It is truly a gem of a piece for your collection,of which very few are found to exist as complete, due to its very limited run of production.
Both components are also in pristine & mint condition.
Over and above the remarkable Art Deco styling of the vase itself, the posy-flower frog is also an incredible item of press moulded glass technical achievement. It could almost,be an `ashtray' or a `dish' all of its own! It would have been machine-pressed,upside down and in one piece, and then cut to size at its hollow base once cooled. There are no moulding lines anywhere present, and due to the intricacy of its remarkable formation, would have been a very challenging item indeed to produce, and just as the vase which accompanies it, there are no other examples of Art Deco press moulded glass flower-frogs,which are anything remotely like it, not from any factory of the period or before it.
It was perhaps and most probable,as to why Rosice, faced financial ruin throughout its early and on-going chequered history. For to produce such items, with such a finite accuracy & intricate forms, would have been both time consuming and very costly and the success-rate of most finished items which remained without any defects following their production, would have been particularly low. This faultless & complete two part vase flower set by Rosice,is an exception to that rule. It is quite simply: Incredible...
I am more than just confident that this piece shall delight you, and become a very much welcomed addition to any collector of Art Deco, glass or items of historical intrinsic beauty...
