Museum Quality Opalescent Uranium Glass Jack in The Pulpit Vase by Thomas Webb, England circa 1880-1910

Free blown opalescent glass has been noted and known for many hundreds of years and throughout every glass making area of the world, however none more so than in England, and at Stourbridge in particular during the Victorian period.

Few skills are needed to produce opalescent glass itself, but to produce top quality examples such as this outstanding piece requires levels of working achievement that is second to none.

This vase is of museum quality and it was produced by the leading exponents of its time: Thomas Webb, circa 1880-1910.

It is an English Victorian vase that commands great attention, and it would have been exceedingly challenging to make.

Jack-in the-pulpit vases lend themselves beautifully as items of display, but this vase is in a league of its own. It stands at an impressive 13 inches tall and has a symmetry and balance of refinement & perfection.

6 inches of its stem is solid Uranium Glass, which together with the foot provides weight and stability to the remarkable top of the piece.

The magnificently shaped & stylized top decorative feature, is an incredible 6 inches wide, however the formation of its back which points upwards and is flat, makes allowance for the vase to comfortably display upon a narrow shelf for example, as it can nestle up closely to a wall.

The exterior of the vase is also `wrythen' patterned with vertical ribs that extend from the foot to then almost disappear into the whispery coloration of creamy-golden opalescence... And then just look at how this piece becomes propelled once again when lit with UV black light.

The qualities of this vase are unique, and my last photograph as shown, illustrates the size & scale of this incredible piece.

It has an unground & unpolished pontil mark to its center base and it is offered to you here completely free of any damage. It is perfect.

This is an important piece of glass for any collection, particularly in this condition and another would prove impossible to find. It is quite simply adorable and a very wise investment piece indeed.
