This is unarguably one of the finest examples of Nepalese Buddhist statuary of its type and of antique vintage that you will find outside of private collections and/or in museums. It's documented & registered date establishes this piece as being late 19th century.
This statue was presented to me personally by Surya Bahadur Thapa, President of Nepal circa 1990. *please also see bottom page.
It was cast in Patan, Nepal, by very highly skilled hands. The craft-metal workers from Patan, throughout recorded history are the finest exponents of these quality metal castings anywhere in the Asian world and are matched only by the metal workers in Southern India. It has also been produced using the `Lost Wax' method of metal casting and so is entirely unique.
The most spectacular example of this statue, in the world, is the Ghandhara Civilization's 'Fasting Buddha' which resides in the Lahore Museum, and any of these ancient figurative examples of Sakyamuni (fasting) Buddha, are exceptionally desirable items indeed, for they are one of the most sacred of his represented image.
I trust that my photographs will illustrate and describe both the condition of this piece and the outstanding levels of quality & detail which have been afforded to this remarkable statue. They also form a major part of the description and confirm to its significant accuracy.
Due to space allowance I am only able to add a very basic and simplistic overview of what this important iconic image represents within Nepalese & Tibetan Buddhism...
It is a held belief that as a young prince, Buddha (Siddhartha) abstained from wealth & worldly goods for a period of six years. He practiced intense mental concentration and the rigors of severe meditation, which led to an emaciated body of skin & bones. This is an image therefore, of Siddhartha Gautama during the period of his extreme self-denial and dis-allowance, until at age of 35 years he ultimately attained the title of Buddha - "The enlightened one"
These statues of the Fasting Siddhartha, rank not only as the finest specimens of Ghandhara Art, but also as one of the most desirable Buddhist images of the ancient world.
The presence of a beard on the face of the Buddha-to-be is a particularly unusual feature, as it is not seen upon any other image of Buddha. It indicates the complete disregard for his own body during this period of his life and is also a detailed depiction of physical reality.
The realism of Buddha's extreme emaciated body is characteristic and incredibly detailed, with bones and straining-sinews and the barest of flesh, which display a faithful familiarity with human anatomy.
... This phenomenal item, as being offered to you exclusively here, also contains `hidden secrets' of which are only found within the most finest examples of metal figures of Siddhartha Gautama: The figure is hollow, and held within for all time, are the hand-written prayers, messages and the personal homage of the maker of this piece,to Buddha. These very special and most sacred of all blessings, were sealed inside of this piece during its time of casting and have remained, untouched or seen.
*Also included with this item is a sample of Labradorite stone. This stone was placed in the hands of this statue, by one of the leading and most recognised exponents of stones in Nepal:
Prem Thapa, Brother of the then President Surya Bahadur Thapa. Countless Buddhist monks, make pilgrimage to Prem, for his unquestionable knowledge of the qualities and symbolic attributes associated to all stone types... He was also my teacher & best friend whilst I studied the art of Buddhist Thangka in Nepal.
Labradorite (within Buddhism)is believed to increase divination skills and psychic awareness, acting as a `third eye' to improve inner vision & perception. It is also used/believed for appointing hidden meanings involving our dreams and the spirits of animals, and will often be used to increase past-life recall, astral travel, telepathy & clairvoyance.
The sample of Labradorite as shown with this statue, shall remain with it whilst in my custody. The lucky purchaser of this statue will also have this stone included, as it belongs...
