The Dolphin Bowl or more generically 'Diving Dolphins' were designed and developed circa 1882 and appear in the original Sowerby pattern book for that year, however by the 1930s the design was further modified many times and using minor differences in size, top formation and colour varieties until being finally registered as pattern Rd number 787048 in circa 1933.
This fabulous bowl was produced by one of the most significant of all press moulded glass companies of history.
Sowerby's Ellison Glass Works Ltd. England, famous throughout the world for their development and introductions of: Vitro-Porcelain, Milk glass and iridescent Carnival glassware for example.
These pattern types are scarce and rare in any colour or size variation and the uranium richness of this example is ever more so desirable in collective terms.
Only five English glassworks of the period used moulded trademarks and only two, Davidson's and Sowerby are known to have actually registered their trademarks.
This bowl carries such a mark. The `peacock' head which was always moulded into the central interior base of these period examples, where it could be clearly seen, from circa 1876 until the mid-1930s when it was replaced by a paper label.
The addition of this moulded Trademark is a substantial bonus to this Sowerby piece, for your collection.
The bowl is wonderfully decorated to its exterior, with stylized floral displays and foliage, whilst three finely detailed `diving dolphins' spiral downwards to form tripod feet which elevates the bowl whilst also providing beautiful decorative features. It's a lovely pattern by Sowerby and is one of their best of the period.
The condition of this bowl is mint, with just age related wear to the pads of each support and the ever present moulded straw-lines which have remained since time & date of manufacture and a common feature upon such press moulded glass types due to the making process and their release from the mould.
This bowl is simply stunning and its moderate size allows for numerous display possibilities and or intended use, and if you are fortunate enough to possess a black light UV light source then WOW, you should see THIS Baby Glow!
