I have photographed this bottle grouped with other examples, to provide scale & size comparison and for display purposes. The other bottles as shown are also currently available from my collection and are each listed individually. Sensible offers shall be considered by request.
Each one is an outstanding example of Peking glass and this bottle is no exception.
Five different coloured glass varieties have been overlaid upon a glass blank of opaque white, to provide the perfect background for the glass to be carved, filed, rasped & etched entirely by hand, so as to reveal each under laying colour with various degrees of glass thickness and transparency.
This truly fine example of Liu Li (Peking Glass) was produced during the Qing dynasty (c1644 – c1911) and so is no later in date than circa 1911.
The batch colour of opaque white glass is the ideal agent onto which an overlay of scarlet, crimson, amethyst green and Chinese Imperial yellow glass types have been applied before the laborious task of carving can begin so as to remove any areas where the colour is not required, to achieve the beautiful decorative features in cameo.
All of this cameo carving was done by hand, using miniature metal rasps, chisels and files specifically developed & designed for the purpose. It is a time consuming process,as layer after layer is gradually removed and or etched so as to provide various thickness and transparency to the coloured glass as used and unaided by machinery or acid/chemical of any kind. The effects achieved are an outstanding accomplishment using glass.
The base circumference depicts a rippling water-pond and cameo carved using three overlaying colours. From the pond, rises seventeen separately carved lotus flowers in various stages of bloom, which cover all faces of the bottle, in the round.
The use of multiple colour combinations is very desirable upon Liu Li (Peking Glass) with one or double overlay being the norm and so to find five colours upon this this piece, firmly places the bottle into a field of its own.
It is completely free of any damage and is a worthy and wise investment piece for your collection.
