This Austrian Art Nouveau iridescent glass vase is very stylish indeed and has instant eye catching appeal with its fabulous quality and design.
It is a Martelle pattern vase and was produced by one of two highly established & recognised glass-works of the period: Kralik or Loetz. Surprisingly perhaps, neither one of the two are distinguishable from each other in the case of this vase, less they be signed which few if any Martelle pattern vases are or have been.
Mouth blown and formed by hand, the vase itself has a shade of olive green, blown into a mold so as to become decorated with a spiders-web of quilted patterns.
Thick and densely coloured purple glass has been applied tooled & combed by hand to create a tripod of stag-horn stylized feet which raises the vase wonderfully whilst providing stability & decorative support. The entire was then iridised with metallic salts and before the glass had cooled.
The result is a rainbow of iridescent lustres as like oil upon water.
Subtle golden-purples soon change to pinks & blues and silvery-greens across the surface of this vase.
Two minute rim chips are evident and can be felt. Most of these vase types have such minor defects due to their method of finish to their tops. They were cut to size and seldom polished and so a rough edge is usually present upon these Austrian glass vase styles.
One of the feet has small nick to its underside edge but is not noticeable and does not interfere with the stability of the vase and is again acceptable for these vase types and is also mentioned here for accuracy of description purposes only.
