German 1930s Art Deco Amber Glass Lady & Bowl Center Piece by Walther & Sohne. ' Lukretia ' pattern
In the world of Art Deco, one factory alone stood out from the crowd to produce these incredibly moulded items, with such quality of refinement and detail.
Walther & Sohnne, Germany.
This charmingly beautiful `Lukretia' pattern, is just one of several of these center piece example types, currently available here in my shop, each produced by beyond doubt, one of the most important of all glass factories of its period.
I would urge you look at all, if only to make comparison, for the glass as was fashioned & created by Walther & Sohnne is without parallel, in terms of German press moulded glass.
August Walther established his glass works in c1888 at Ottendorf- Okilla, Dresden, Germany, until eventually, during the 1930s, he produced these remarkable works of Art Deco glass.
Introduced and catalogued circa 1935, Lukretia was available as this centrepiece with numerous bowl pattern varieties. The central figure was also available as a solitary figurine, and due to its standard sized base, was also interchangeable as a feature part of a lamp, for example,to suit individual requirements of the period.
Walther glass center pieces make a statement, and each is an incredible work of art which all demand attention and Lukretia is just one such example. This is press moulded amber glass to perfection...
Walther totally understood their working medium and they used quality of design coupled with skill, to achieve outstanding results to practically every single item that they produced during the Art Deco period. The various thickness of glass, combined with colour variations & finite detailing and stylized forms, display press moulded glass beauty which is inarguably second to none, in terms of affordability without compromise to quality.
The central lady of this piece has been moulded solid. Only her base is hollow, which is for good reason, for she catches & refracts light evenly throughout her golden-butterscotch amber colour (like a fibre optic) to each of her delicately detailed features.
'Lukretia' is a glass lady with much gracefulness & movement, from the way she runs her fingers through her hair, to her facial expression of peaceful contemplation and her gossamer robe of chiffon which appears to flow in a garden breeze, whilst presenting to the viewer her collection of fruit & flowers...
Each and every detail has been faithfully captured, completely in the round and with fluency. She is breathtakingly wonderful as a lady alone, however when placed into her bowl, she becomes uplifting & magnificent.
The bowl pattern is `Buckeberg' (a Town near Hamelin, Germany) and is the perfect accompaniment for these Lukretia figural glass studies by Walther, for it provides a matched harmony of moulded glass floral motifs & sprigs of barleycorn with delicacy as is equal to the lady.
It is a wonderful choice of bowl for this piece.
Its mushroom form has been highly fire-polished to its interior whilst its underside has been satin frosted to complement the lady within. Walther, thought of everything throughout each of their designs and so they provided these Buckeberg bowl types with three, wonderfully moulded scroll feet, which raises the bowl to allow for light penetration that in turn provides beautiful optic effects wherever it is displayed.
Further attention to detail & quality has been applied to this bowl, as each of the three feet have been ground & polished so as to sit flat, even and horizontally upon any suitable interior displaying surface to suit individual requirements.
The condition of this center piece is remarkable.
Just the tiniest of nicks to the rim-edge base of the lady as shown is the only thing which is evident.
Both items have not suffered from any other nicks, cracks or defects and so are in tip-top condition for your collection.
This is a desirable item indeed and your satisfaction is more than just guaranteed because 'Lukretia' by Walther & Sohne is a center piece which never fails to please.
She is simply gorgeous.
