Of all Art Deco pressed glass trinket sets produced by any maker and anywhere, very few can compare to the romantic beauty of this phenomenal example pattern by Walther & Sohne, Germany. Circa 1934.
It is the `Nymphen' (water nymphs) all glass trinket set, produced by inarguably the best German producer of Art Deco press moulded glass of the 20th century.
Walther, embraced the theme of stylized marine patterns without any known parallel, save for the likes of R Lalique or Sabino, however what price would you have to pay for the tray alone, if it bared either one signature???
Walther glass was, is, and shall for ever remain much more than just `the next best thing' and at a fraction of the price without any compromise to quality and exceptional style. Nymphen, is perfection, using press moulded glass techniques. Period...
Walther, understood their craft, inside and out, using glass-thickness combined with unmatched design to achieve ultimate optic visuals throughout their glass.
The tray of this 7 piece set for example, has been superbly intaglio moulded to its underside, with crispness & definition seldom seen or elsewhere achieved. The way with which the merman & his mermaid, have been moulded almost defies belief...
The variation of depths to the glass to portray their muscle tones and expressive features; their lower body scales and the wonderful water weeds etc. etc., each and all are meticulous in there formation using press moulded glass.
Difficult to see, but very evident,is the very cleverly disguised `feet' of the tray,to give it height and to allow for light penetration... These feet can be noted using clear glass between the merman & mermaids elbow joints, and the spaces between their tails. Walther, thought of everything, with practically every item of glass that they ever produced.
The tray alone, is a masterpiece of Art Deco glass design and then what of the candlestick holders? The lidded pots? Right down to the enchanting ring-tree dish...
It is no small wonder that Nymphen, is potentially the most coveted of all press moulded trinket sets of the 20th century and particularly, using uranium green glass, for just look how this glass performs when it is lit by UV.
Mind blowing, is an understatement, which is as to why just the tray, in uranium green glass has attained such worldwide adoration.
I personally, choose to display these Nymphen trays upon a window sill shelf, where just as like a stained glass window, they come to life ever more. The trays can & do accommodate each & all of its components, but to cover the tray with ANY-THING, almost seems a crime!
To provide scale of size, I have photographed the candlesticks together with a further pair of figural Art Deco examples, for the Nymphen set candlesticks are as impressive as it gets, with these stylized female forms.
Just one single candlestick,is a joy to behold and displays undeniable quality and visual appeal, in any interior setting, and as a perfectly matched pair? They are sublime.
The price of THIS set reflects some evident damage. The good news however, is that the tray and both candle stick holders are damage free. The ring tree also, has but the tiniest of nicks.
It is the trinket pots which though are stable, have various degrees of damage, which though do not interfere with the undeniable visual appeal of this set, are evident and so are here described. My photographs also form a part of the description of this incredible set and are as follow:
Large lidded pot: Internal hairline behind the lady lid. Both lids of each smaller pots: Chips as are shown. I care not,to undermine the above damage, however in terms of display, none of it can be seen when viewed as is and had this set been in pristine mint condition, then a rarity indeed it would be.
If it is perfection of GLASS that you seek, then this set is not for you. If it is perfection of display quality, then look no further, for you will not see a finer, complete Art Deco pressed glass trinket set with such phenomenally passionate and histrionic, visual appeal, save for one or two by this very same factory.
'Nymphen' by Walther & Sohne, is but a dream, in terms of Art Deco press moulded glass for your collection and you will love it...
