*** Please kindly appreciate that I am hopeless at photography. Even pictures of items much larger than this prove very problematic for me. May I suggest that you view my other listings of antiquities, where further photos can be used for a comparison, as the photographs form a part of the description of this pectoral.
I thank you in advance for your understanding & your consideration ***
This is a remarkable Archaeological Ancient Antiquity Emerald Green Glass & Silver Pectoral of a Flute Player. Samsdong. Upper Mustang. Nepal. B.C. – c.15 AD
Due to their very nature and as you would expect, all ancient glass items are exceptional survivors,be they from any country of origin and this pectoral pendant is as exceptional as most, if not all.
It is without any known parallel and is of museum quality and has been meticulously detailed using an emerald green glass. It is also the only known and documented emerald green glass pectoral of its type in existence.
It has come from the ground and dates from B.C. to 15th century.
It was processed through The Archaeological & Historical Department of Nepal. ALL such items have to be (and should be) so as to identify their significance and historical importance.
I obtained license during one of my many visits & stays in the country during the 1980s/1990s,some twenty years prior to the more recently advertised and discovery of the now so named "Shangri-La" caves of Upper Mustang. My associations with the then Government of Nepal, can also be verified & substantiated.
This amazing piece is just one example from my personal collection of original ancient archaeological artefacts from the above country, each having been excavated by persons unknown from where they were found in human-carved caves, carved into sheer cliffs in the Himalayan ancient kingdom of Mustang at a location within Samdzong, Nepal.
I cannot emphasise enough that ANY ancient item from Nepal,is seldom seen, found or offered for sale here in the West and this ancient glass pectoral is no exception. Export of such items away from Nepal,is now strictly forbidden.
To enter Samsdong (Upper Mustang) even today,is stringently restricted to just a thousand foreign visitors per year, most of which are professionals within the field of archaeology and few have been able to explore the mysterious caves,as they are now an on-going excavation site of worldwide heritage and International importance.
Recent excavations at this ancient site have discovered several caves of both domestic & mortuary tombs. Many of which had been looted since ancient times and although one can never condone such practices, all of the items within my collection as previously mentioned have been cleared and processed by the Authorities of Nepal.
This incredible and remarkable silver metal pectoral encases a quality of emerald green glass seldom seen as having been produced by the ancients of any race or creed and is of major historical importance.
It would have been produced within a dampened mould of dampened sand (?) so as to not suffer from impurities once cooled. The understanding by the ancients (who produced this incredible piece) quite literally is beyond ones belief in terms of glass working knowledge, coupled with skill.
I have two other glass examples, currently listed here exclusively in my shop. All of which also display signs of very early "cutting" of glass, so to add ever more detail to their moulded forms.
All and each, would have been very highly prized and greatly valued by their unknown custodian, who must have been a person of important significance.
That this pectoral was worn during its date is evident by friction rubbing to its ring suspension.
It is in incredible rare condition, for such an item of which exceeds 2000 years of age and depicts an equally rare portrayal of this period...
... the Fuke sect of Zen Buddhist monks. The flute players, which were in medieval times also known as the komusō (the priests of emptiness) of nothingness. The Flute (of the Zen Buddhist Monks of this period) was called the shakuhachi, which origins crossed from Japan and into China, before then becoming more widespread throughout Tibet and Nepal and other neighbouring Asian countries of Buddhist faith.
This flute, was more a spiritual tool than a musical instrument,to the Zen Monkhood, when their breathing(rather than the sounds being produced) was considered and paced during times of meditation.
The Fuke sect of Zen Buddhists, were an exclusive sect,of whom little documentation or important information is known to exist. The mere use of the flute (shakuhachi) was for years strictly forbidden in ancient times, and so much has been lost which can enable us today,to understand all of its influential significance or importance within faith of Zen during ancient times.
This remarkable find of a Glass Pectoral,is of substantial importance within the field of the medieval Fuke sect faith, and it has proved to be very problematic to place a price upon such a piece.
I am not in the least bit, money orientated and I have no desire to "Auction" my items off and away,as if living within a circus. However, nor can I be a charity, for we each and all live in Western world where we have to finance, just to survive.
I have priced this piece (and also my other such examples) upon what I consider to be fair and reasonable. There is NOTHING in saleable existence to which I am able to compare to these pieces. This glass of some 2000 years of age is amongst the rarest items within my entire personal collection of desirable objects.
The measurements of this piece are an exceptionally good size indeed at 1.75 x 2 inches
